Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP carry the same request-response model over different layers. Modbus RTU is a binary serial protocol framed by silent intervals and protected by a CRC-16, usually running on an RS485 bus. Modbus TCP wraps the same protocol data unit in an Ethernet frame and drops the CRC in favour of TCP's own checksum.
